IN THE NEWS: Yomi Martin, co-founder of Vokal Clothing, is teaming with the owners of Canyon Cafe and a handful of professional athletes to open a restaurant in suburban Dallas, the St. Louis Business Journal reports. Akin Ayodele, a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys, and three members of the Dallas Mavericks, whom Martin said he will name later, are starting Jerseyville Classic, a restaurant and grill to be based in The Shops at Willow Bend mall in Plano, Texas. The move comes two years after Martin helped develop the Jerseyville concept, which he originally planned to launch in St. Louis' Central West End. Martin said he's been unable to secure a site locally but is still planning a Jerseyville restaurant in St. Louis, most likely in west St. Louis County. Potential local sites include part of the Westfield's West County Center space that used to be occupied by Lord & Taylor. Buck's was established in 1999 and named after Jack, Joe, and Julie Buck, the legendary broadcasting family. ... The Journal also reports that nine-story The Crescent, a $73 million development at 155 Carondelet Plaza across from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, will open to residents and retailers in September. Restaurateur Brad Beracha, who owns and operates Miso in Clayton, will open an expansive Southern European restaurant and wine lounge, called Araka, on the ground floor of The Crescent. It will have 8,300 square feet of space, including a patio with 70 seats facing the Ritz -- making Araka one of the largest outdoor dining options in Clayton. They presented their plan to the Clifton Heights Neighborhood Association (May 29) and it was met with overall optimism and enthusiasm—until Alderman Waterhouse informed residents of the moratorium on liquor licenses in the 24th ward. Apparently the moratorium was put in place in an effort to keep QuickTrip from moving into the space. So it seems things are somewhat up in the air and this point and we’ll all have to hang tight and write letters of support if we want to see it happen. Residents (including me) have been jonesing for a decent restaurant or coffee shop to go into that space. ... Other news of the area—Bartolino’s will be relocating to the new Drury Inn going in at Hampton and 44. Nice that a local restaurant is going in the space rather than a chain. Krewson introduced her dog-dining bill earlier this month after hearing from the operator of the Boathouse in Forest Park. Chicago's Frontera Grill won Outstanding Restaurant of the Year and Michel Richard of Michel Richard Citronelle in Washington, D.C. was named Outstanding Chef at the 2007 James Beard Foundation Awards Ceremony. Hosted by CBS Early Show anchor Hannah Storm, the Beard Awards were held May 7 at Avery Fisher Hall in New York's Lincoln Center. More than 60 awards were presented by the country's pre-eminent nonprofit culinary organization, in its 20th anniversary celebration, and more than 1,600 industry leaders attended the ceremony. Other top awards went to: New York's L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, named Best New Restaurant; Thomas Keller (The French Laundry, Yountville, Ca.) received the award for Outstanding Restaurateur; and David Chang (Momofuku Noodle Bar, New York) received the Rising Star Chef of the Year award. Celebrity and culinary superstar attendees included Stephanie March, Ted Allen, Katie Lee Joel, Martha Stewart, Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Thomas Keller, Jose Andres, Tom Colicchio, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Padma Lakshmi, and Marcus Samuelsson.
